Obama signed an executive order that labels the Taliban group, and any members operating in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region, a \"foreign terrorist organisation.\" The move, which last January prompted the United States to the re-impose full sanctions on the group, had been in the works for some time.
The United States imposed full sanctions, including an embargo, on the Libyan government, including the central bank and a group of companies that did business with it, for the \"murder, maiming and non-delivery of humanitarian aid\" in its offensive against rebels in Benghazi. Overnight, Obama's administration authorized the deployment of an additional 1,000 US troops to the US embassy compound in Libya.
The Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) will adopt a resolution reaffirming the importance of the International Criminal Court in its 50th session on 7 March. This follows statements made by one OIC member state respectively condemning the ICC, during a tumultuous session of the OIC General Assembly held in April, 2015. The OIC has shot down proposals to set up a new international war crimes tribunal, in response to the ICC's involvement in investigations into the situation in Syria, Libya and the Central African Republic. One OIC member state, Saudi Arabia, has also vowed to intervene militarily against the ICC if it decides to open a full investigation into alleged atrocities committed in 2015. The Secretary-General of the OIC, Turkish Foreign Minister, Mehmet Feritoglu, has gone ahead with their plan to call upon the ICC to formally launch an investigation into the situation in Sudan. This is the first time that any member of the OIC has ever requested a trial by the ICC. The OIC is a political community, and the Secretary-General is free to call for a meeting of the ICC to discuss an investigation into alleged crimes in Sudan. 7211a4ac4a
