Mesenchymal-to-epithelial transition (MET) is the molecular conversion of an epithelial or mesenchymal phenotype to an epithelial phenotype in the progression of certain epithelial cancers. Recent studies have shown that ligands of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma) transcription factor are capable of inducing MET in different epithelial cells. The present study was designed to investigate whether MET can be induced in liver-derived stellate cells by the ligands of PPARgamma. The effects of PPARgamma ligands on cell proliferation and expression of lineage-specific markers in mesenchymal stellate cells were investigated. Furthermore, the role of PPARgamma in regulating the expression of markers of epithelial differentiation and MET was analyzed in LX-2 cells transfected with PPARgamma, PPARgamma2, PPARgam 0b46394aab
